Episode VII's diverse, young cast

TheForce.Net and other sites have confirmed that this casting list for Star Wars Episode VII is the real thing:
Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit.
Young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking.
A late twentysomething male, fit, handsome and confident.
Seventy-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanour. Also doesn’t need to be particularly fit.
A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.
Forty something male, fit, military type.
Thirtysomething male, intellectual. Apparently doesn’t need to be fit.
So, it doesn't look like there will be any Solo twins.

The most significant thing about this cast list for me is of course the two female leads, although they, like the men, are hard to differentiate from each other based on casting specs alone. And for all that we know, some of these characters could be aliens. Note that only one male is listed as "not traditionally good looking", although I don't think that means much before casting. (Hello, Benedict Cumberbatch.)

The males also have more age diversity than the women. The "late-teen" designation is interesting in comparison to a recent rumor that the Rebels show will also focus on teenagers.
This particular story probably won't be seeing the big screen.
Ahsoka helped The Clone Wars become popular with teens, and Luke and Leia were supposed to be 19 during A New Hope. I think it follows naturally that an animated series airing on a Disney channel and meant to entertain fans who grew up with The Clone Wars would have a teenage cast. It's a bit more telling that that's also the case with the movie, although twenty-something is the go-to age for fit, adult characters.

Teens can mean drama, and J.J. Abrams has said that the Sequel Trilogy will involve a central love story. (Independent and smart / witty and smart OTP.) Also, presumably these characters will grow up throughout the three sequel movies, which seems to me an indication that our youngest heroes, the two women, could be the main characters.

Only time will tell. Bleeding Cool also reports that open casting started in the UK on Wednesday, June 19.
