The Return of Toonami

Cartoon Network's Adult Swim announced today that 90s-00s cult classic Toonami will return this Saturday May 26. The exact content lineup is unknown but expect some popular anime such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, as well as the return of the Steve Blum-voiced robotic host, TOM.

With my own fond memories of watching Thundercats on Toonami, I'm wondering whether that show will be moved to the new Toonami or kept in its current time slot. Either way, this is exciting news. It also shows the power of fan voices: fans who grew up with Toonami have been clamoring for its return and spreading the desire for this year's Cartoon Network April Fools prank, in which they first announced the return, to be a reality. Now that it is the joke's on us, but that only makes fans happier. I expect a lot of twenty-somethings to tune in on Saturday nights.

  1. Adult Swim already shows anime on Saturday nights, but they've been circling around the same shows for a long time now (you can only watch "Cowboy Bebop" or "FLCL" so many times before it grows stale). I wonder if this means they'll be moving all the anime into Toonami, and turning Saturdays into just another day for Adult Swim's lame comedy shtick.

I'd like to see more of a rotation of newer and classic shows, myself, especially if they air them during an earlier timeslot. Maybe we can see "Evangelion" come back for a bit?

  2. I'm really hoping they bring Tiger and Bunny to the lineup. That is one amazing superhero anime.

  3. You know, it took me until it showed tonight to realize that this is really just a rebranding of adult swim's usual Saturday anime line-up with the Toonami name. It's especially depressing that they only have two new shows. "Deadman Wonderland" and "Cashern Sins" are debuting tonight, but "Bleach", "Cowboy Bebop", "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "Stand Alone Complex" have been on the adult swim roster for years now. So really, it's just a case of meet the new boss.
